Filing deadline
Definition
A filing deadline is the last date a candidate can submit paperwork, fees, or petition signatures to appear on a primary or general election ballot. It is a hard cutoff set months before voters go to the polls, usually well before public attention turns to the race.1
Why it matters
Deadlines set months ahead of a low-attention window mean challengers can miss their shot before most voters are even paying attention, favoring incumbents and well-organized insiders who track the calendar year-round. Missing the deadline by even a day typically disqualifies a candidate outright, regardless of the reason.
Seen in the wild
Texas's 2026 statewide primary candidate filing deadline was December 8, 2025, three months before its March 2026 primary, according to Ballotpedia's contemporaneous coverage.2
