Running for office in Alaska

State page·Verified 2026-07-10

This page covers what's specific to Alaska on top of the general guide to filing for local office.

Filing in Alaska

Alaska splits filing into two entirely separate systems depending on the office. State legislative candidates file with the state Division of Elections, pay a $30 filing fee, and must also submit a Financial Disclosure Statement to the Alaska Public Offices Commission by the same deadline. Local office works differently: the Division of Elections has no authority over municipal elections at all. City councils, borough assemblies, and similar local offices are run entirely by each municipality's own clerk under state statute and local ordinance, so there is no single statewide deadline, fee, or petition rule for local races. Because a large share of Alaska's local seats sit in small municipalities and unorganized borough areas, checking with the specific city or borough clerk is not optional here, it's the only way to find the real deadline.

Deadlines and numbers

  • 2026 state legislature filing deadline: 5:00pm, Monday, June 1, 2026
  • Withdrawal deadline: August 31, 2026
  • State legislature filing fee: $30, plus an Alaska Public Offices Commission Financial Disclosure Statement
  • Local office: no statewide deadline or fee exists. Set independently by each city or borough clerk

The dossier flags this as a gap rather than a number: local filing deadlines and requirements vary by municipality and need a per-city or per-borough lookup. Route that lookup to /engage.
