Running for office in Illinois
This page covers what's specific to Illinois on top of the general guide to filing for local office.
Filing in Illinois
Illinois runs candidate filing through nominating petitions rather than a flat filing fee: no source in this dossier described a monetary filing fee alternative, unlike states such as Georgia or Washington. To get on the ballot, you collect signatures from registered voters in the district you want to represent and file a completed petition packet by a fixed statutory deadline. Established-party candidates file during a window tied to the primary election. New-party and independent candidates file later, in a window tied to the general election instead. Statewide, legislative, and congressional candidates file with the Illinois State Board of Elections. County offices and many local offices file with the county clerk or the relevant local election authority. Petitions can't be circulated indefinitely: state law sets a circulation start date tied to the filing deadline.
Deadlines and numbers
- 2026 established-party filing window: 127 to 120 days before the March 17, 2026 primary, closed November 3, 2025 at 5:00pm
- New-party/independent filing window: 141 to 134 days before the general election
- Petition circulation can begin 90 days before the last day of the applicable filing period
- Signature minimums are calculated per office and compiled in the state's annual Candidate's Guide
The dossier could not confirm whether Illinois charges a filing fee for any office class beyond its signature-petition model, and did not find exact numeric signature thresholds broken out for common local offices like city council or county board, since the state's Candidate's Guide calculates these per office per cycle. Route both to /engage or the State Board of Elections.
