Running for office in New Mexico
This page covers what's specific to New Mexico on top of the general guide to filing for local office.
Filing in New Mexico
Local office candidates file with their county clerk, not the Secretary of State, even though the Secretary of State's office publishes the candidate guides that local filings also follow. To qualify, you pay a $50 filing fee or, as an alternative, gather signatures on a nominating petition: 10 signatures for offices elected by district, 20 for offices elected countywide. New Mexico runs two separate election calendars. State and county partisan offices, like the legislature and county commission, follow the even-year cycle with a June primary. Municipal offices and school boards instead follow the Local Election Act's odd-year calendar, with Regular Local Elections held every November of an odd year. Identify which calendar your office follows before you plan around any date below.
Deadlines and numbers

The dossier couldn't confirm the exact 2027 Regular Local Election filing deadline for municipal offices, since the Secretary of State's Bureau of Elections sets it closer to the cycle. The fee and signature figures above are confirmed for county-level office. Requirements can vary by specific municipal charter or special district. Confirm both with your county clerk or /engage.
