Running for office in New York
This page covers what's specific to New York on top of the general guide to filing for local office.
Filing in New York
New York doesn't use a filing-fee system for most candidacies. Instead, you typically qualify for the primary ballot by circulating a party designating petition signed by enrolled members of your own party, or qualify for the general election ballot as an independent by circulating an independent nominating petition open to any registered voter who hasn't already signed a petition for that office. Where you file depends on the office: the State Board of Elections handles statewide, congressional, and other multi-county offices, while petitions for offices confined to a single county, including many state legislative districts and most local offices, go to that county's board of elections, or the New York City Board of Elections for the five boroughs. All filings must be on paper, within business hours on the final filing day. The state board doesn't accept petitions by fax or email.

The dossier didn't separately confirm exact signature ranges for city council, town board, county legislature, or school board candidates, since these are set per office and jurisdiction and vary by local board of elections. It also didn't pin down the precise 2026 last-day-to-file date for designating petitions specifically, as distinct from the independent and general-election windows sourced above. Check the current year's Political Calendar or /engage before circulating any petition.
