Running for office in Oklahoma

State page·Verified 2026-07-10

This page covers what's specific to Oklahoma. Start with the general guide for the steps every candidate follows regardless of state.

Filing in Oklahoma

Oklahoma mostly runs on filing fees rather than signature petitions, though a petition is offered as an alternative. You submit a notarized Declaration of Candidacy along with either a cashier's or certified check for the filing fee, or a petition signed by at least 2 percent of registered voters in the relevant district, county, or state. A Voter Registration Verification Form is also required.

Where you file depends on the office. Federal, state, legislative, and judicial candidates file directly with the Secretary of the State Election Board at the State Capitol. County office candidates file with their county election board instead. Filing packets, including the exact petition forms and instructions, come from the State Election Board or the relevant county board.
