The Georgia legislature: how it works

State page·Verified 2026-07-10

What your state legislature controls covers the general powers. This page profiles Georgia's legislature.

The basics

The Georgia General Assembly is bicameral: a 180-member House of Representatives and a 56-member Senate, each elected to 2-year terms with no term limits currently in effect. (A 2026 Senate resolution proposing 12-year chamber limits and 4-year Senate terms was advancing but had not been enacted.) It meets in a single annual regular session capped at 40 legislative days, convening the second Monday in January. The 2026 session convened January 12. Because the legislative calendar is short and pay is modest, Georgia is generally classified as a hybrid, part-time legislature, meaning most members hold outside employment alongside their legislative duties.

Who controls it now

Georgia has a Republican trifecta. Republicans hold the majority in both the House (100-80 following the 2024 elections) and the Senate. Jon G. Burns serves as Speaker of the House, and Lt. Governor Burt Jones presides over the Senate as President, with Larry Walker III as President Pro Tempore.
